Movement capacity what is it ? Or also know as Movement Competency.
A Stability
B Mobility
C Flexibility
D All of the above ……
The correct answer is D
This is an important part of building your tactical athlete programme for any arm of the forces or emergency services and is often neglected.
The text book definition of movement capacity is
This is the to perform fundamental movement patterns like squatting, deadlifting as well as basic coordination patterns like crawling and lunging. (Gray Cook)
Stability
This is the ability to stabilise any joint or a body segment in a given position that is centred and fixed in that said position
Mobility
The ability to undertake and perform fundamental movement patterns like squatting, deadlifting as well as basic coordination patterns like crawling and lunging.
Flexibility
This is the ROM of a joint and its ability to move freely through its full range of motion without any impingement in motion or decrease in output ie strength.
The three of these are fundamentals in order to prevent injuries and progress through your programme, and be operationally ready.
To that end consider the following key areas in your training when looking at movement capacity and improving your overall movement competency in relation to injury prevention and increased ROM.
Warm ups
Cool downs
Active recovery
Stretching in all forms, static, ballistic, dynamic PNF and so on
